Life has a way of throwing curve balls when we least expect it.

We were living in Savannah with our 3 dogs, I was teaching online while working on my doctorate degree. My first husband had been ill with bronchitis and had spent time in bed. Unfortunately, all this time in bed allowed for blood clots to form and travel to his heart. 26 hours after he entered the emergency room, he died and I became a widow at a young age.

His death alone was traumatic, but after he coded for the second time, I was informed he was unconscious for too long and after running some tests it was determined he had no brain function. Due to hospital regulations, the next of kin was awarded the opportunity to turn off the life support and physically pull the plug on the machine. Unlucky me!

Additionally, there were numerous challenges including my husband being emotionally abusive resulting in walking on eggshells waiting for the next outburst.

His death opened a can of worms as secrets unraveled. It was a bit stressful, to say the least. Immediately after his death, a number of issues and challenges came to light. He had been hiding financial dealings, covering up and doing things in secret that weren’t right. This included not paying bills or not sending checks after I had written them. It was a big mess.Within 24 hours of his death, I went from grieving to pissed off to beyond angry. I did go through a grieving process, and even though I had done quite a bit of grief work, what I had done didn’t prepare me for this situation.

but then

this happened

My body couldn’t take it anymore. I had no clue what to do with my emotions, all of my anger, grief, shame, and frustration.

Instead of dealing with these emotions, I ended up stuffing those emotions down deep in my body because I didn’t think I could share them with him, obviously, because he was now dead.

I never imagined I would experience abuse, grief, and trauma, yet alone all together.

So I tried…

M

nothing, for a long while.

M

lots and lots of alcohol.

M

doing it by myself.

M

reading books.

M

a free grief group at church.

M

talking with friends and family.

M

searching for a magic pill to make it all go away.

What I wanted
(and needed)…

N

my life back before the loss, trauma, and abuse.

N

a safe place to proccess my thoughts.

N

to fill the void and not be empty.

N

how to handle the hard days and the in-between days.

N

to find my "new normal".

N

peace, comfort, and security.

N

a plan, path, blue print, or roadmap to healing.

What I found…

it's ok to not be OK.

a way to give a voice to my emotions so they could finally be heard.

an action-based, powerful, directed approach to healing from life's deepest heartbreaks.

a method to release all of the trapped emotion in my body.

how to forgive. In case no one has told you, forgiveness is for us, the living and is much healthier for us.

the importance of making small changes such as including healthier food options, adding in movement, scheduling time for rest and sleep, and tons of self-care.

And that’s when it hit me!

What if I combined all of these components into
The Dare To Live Again Academy
to help other women overcome their
grief, trauma, and abuse?

Phase 1

Healing From Grief, Trauma And Abuse Is A Journey,
Not A Destination

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

N

Healing is a process, not an event

Healing doesn’t happen over night. It’s a Process. Health is a journey, and healing is the steps you take along that journey to get closer to your ideal picture of vibrant living.

N

Self-compassion is essential for healing

We are much more likely to notice, react to, and remember unpleasant, distressful, negative experiences than pleasant, soothing, positive ones. We can reverse this with self-compassion.

N

Resilience is key to navigating setbacks and challenges

Resilience is the ability to adapt to difficult situations. When stress, adversity or trauma strikes, you still experience anger, grief and pain, but you’re able to keep functioning, both physically and psychologically.

Phase 2

Connection And Community Are Essential For Healing

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

N

Isolation and shame can be major obstacles to healing

When we are shamed repeatedly, we are taught to think that our feelings are wrong and our experiences are delusive.  We learn to distrust ourselves; we learn to deny our own truth, even to ourselves. Transforming this mindset requires a witness with a willingness to look and listen in a most powerful way, by seeing, feeling and believing.

N

Vulnerability and authenticity are key to building meaningful relationships

In a world where vulnerability is sometimes misinterpreted as weakness, embracing our flaws is the key to unlocking the tremendous potential of true connection.

N

Support and encouragement from others can be a powerful catalyst for healing

People facing common issues are able to share what’s troubling them. Through the sharing of experiences, they’re able to offer support, encouragement, and comfort to the other group members, and receive the same in return.

Phase 3

Faith Can Be A Source Of Strength And Comfort, But Can Also Be A Complex And Evolving Process

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

N

Faith can be a powerful tool for healing

Faith is an incredibly powerful tool for promoting positive attitudes. It can provide the strength and courage to face difficult situations, and the hope and optimism to strive for a better future.

N

Doubt and uncertainty are natural parts of the faith journey

Confusion and doubt are part of the spiritual journey. Our faith is based on the sense that Jesus is present in our lives today.

N

Embracing ambiguity and change can lead to growth and transformation

How we handle change is the essence of our existence and the key to happiness, particularly after grief, trauma or abuse.
